SINGLE’S DAY: A HISTORY
Single’s Day or Guanggun Jie (光棍节), originated in Nanjing China during the 1990’s and was first celebrated by single university students, where single people partied with their single friends. This holiday takes place on 11.11, the date chosen for its symbolism between the number ‘1’ and being single. On this day, young singles organize parties and karaoke, eating Youtiao (deep-fried dough sticks) as representation for the four ones and one Baozi (steamed stuffed bun) as representation for the dot.
